SBU’s Quick Center for the Arts closes for summer renovations

Jun 11, 2024

St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts (QCA) will temporarily close for renovations beginning now through the end of August.

Plans include refurbishing the QCA’s two main galleries — the Dresser Foundation Gallery and the Paul W. Beltz Gallery.

Pictured_QCA logoThe Dresser Foundation Gallery, which is located on the first floor and currently features works by European and American masters from the University Art Collection, will be renovated to become a changing exhibition space.

"Hunger and Resilience” by Texas photographer Michael Nye will be featured in the gallery beginning in September as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Warming House, the university’s student-run soup kitchen in Olean. Nye, who practiced law for 10 years before pursuing photography full time, is an award-winning photographer as well as an audio/photographic documentarian. The exhibition features 50 portraits and audio stories that “reveal the courage and fragility of those individuals who have experienced hunger.”

The second floor Paul W. Beltz Gallery will become the new home for exhibiting the University Art Collection, with the first long-term exhibition showcasing paintings from the 14th century through the 19th century.

The university’s encyclopedic art collection, which includes Asian, European, American, Modern and Contemporary art, as well as pieces from the John Rogers Statuary Groups, has been installed on an ongoing basis in Quick Center galleries since its opening in 1995.

“We are excited to refurbish these galleries and reimagine the spaces,” said Evelyn Penman, QCA assistant director and senior curator. “I am especially looking forward to finding interesting ways to display the university’s extraordinary collections and to maximize their potential as teaching resources.”

A full schedule for the QCA’s fall exhibitions and performances will be released later this summer. To learn more about the Quick Center, please visit ypgmse.spacebunny.net/quickcenter.
